HERRING TALES

A set of free, herring-based, educational resource packs for 4 to 8 year olds – suitable for lockdown home schooling, post-lockdown school schooling, maybe even shoal schooling. Each one contains a story filled with beautiful information, interesting pictures and a set of practical activities. Between them, they cover curricular territories such as Science, Technology, Engineering and even Maths, English, History, Music, Poetry (is that separately on the curriculum? Who knows?) and Art. There is no curriculum subject that can’t be taught through the herring. Get in contact if you think something’s missing!

From its origins in the seas between the ancient continents of Laurasia and Gondwanaland to its high-pitched shoal communication.

The first herring poet and his adventures with Eric Bloodaxe, Haakon the Good and Harald Greycloak.

The classic traditional song, expressing the herring’s importance to the community (together with a link to a performance).

Things you may not have considered about that tin of sardines in the cupboard – like, are they really herrings?

The women who worked the herring ports, gutting, salting and packing: strength, cleverness and how to use it.
